02/11/2010 - Eurotunnel wins IFW Award for Leadership in Sustainable Development
Eurotunnel has been awarded the prize for Leadership in Sustainable Development by Europe’s leading transport and logistics periodical, International Freighting Weekly (IFW).
Eurotunnel came ahead of several major international organisations including: American Airlines Cargo, CMA CGM, Hellman UK, Samsung Heavy Industries and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.
The judges, composed of experts from the world of transport and logistics, recognised Eurotunnel’s Environmental report and the Group’s continuing commitment to sustainable development, which adds real value for customers.
Eurotunnel is described as:
- An infrastructure which facilitates Channel crossing without any contact with the marine environment
- A transport system powered by electricity, with a carbon footprint far smaller than its competitors
- Policies that target energy reduction, waste management, water treatment and noise control
- A site in Coquelles, France, that generates electricity from renewable sources using wind turbines
- A remarkable track record in the preservation and maintenance of biodiversity in both the UK and France
- Continuous information to customers, suppliers and staff, promoting environmental awareness
Eurotunnel is also creating a club, with members drawn from amongst the major European road hauliers, for whom carbon footprint reduction is a priority.
On receiving the award, Jo Willacy, Eurotunnel Commercial Director, said, “I am really proud that Eurotunnel has won this IFW award as Leader in Sustainable Development. Eurotunnel has embraced sustainable development since the design phase and this award crowns that constant commitment to the environment. It also brings real added value for our customers – who are, themselves, increasingly sensitive to the need for sustainable development.”
