161 students Graduate at IITGN’s 3rd Convocation

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) hosted its 3rd Convocation on Saturday (August 2, 2014).

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, August 04, 2014 -(PressReleasePoint)- Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) hosted its 3rd Convocation on Saturday (August 2, 2014).  This year, the institute graduated its first batch of PhD students. A total of 123 BTech students, 36 MTech students and 2 PhD students were awarded degrees on the occasion. In addition, 40 medals and awards for academic, sports, leadership and community service were awarded to graduating students.
Shri K Ventakaramanan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Larsen and Toubro Limited, was Chief Guest at the event and delivered the convocation speech.  In his talk Venkataraman encouraged the students to contribute to the country’s progress. “Go and study abroad but do come back. There are many opportunities in this country. You will have careers and dreams to pursue but you must also remember your alma mater and also that you have a debt to pay to this country.
Nearly 30 percent of the graduating BTech students at IITGN have foreign experience in the form of foreign internships, study abroad opportunities, participation in international conferences, etc.
Akshay Jain a graduating student who participated in three international exchanges to the United States and Singapore during his tenure at IITGN, said: “It is a wonderful experience where I got to learn and understand a lot, both within and outside academics. The international contacts that I developed during such visits are helping me in various ways. Apart from its unique nature of being open to new ideas, IITGN abounds with such opportunities for students.”
Talking about the institute’s success and achievements IITGN Director Prof Sudhir K Jain said, “The numerous innovations and experiments that we have undertaken have started to show very visible impact and tangible results already. With the current trajectory and with continued engagement, ownership and participation of our stake holders, we are confident that in the not-too-distant future, the country and the world will start to acknowledge IIT Gandhinagar as one of the leading universities in India and among the best in the world.”
The number of student opting for higher studies has grown by almost 50% from 17 students last year to 25 this year. Nearly 15% of the graduating students will be pursuing MTech or research programmes in foreign universities, such as Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue University, Texas A & M University, University of California, Cornel University, Stanford University, Virginia Tech University, Georgia Institute of Technology etc. Six students opted for further studies in some of the IIMs in the country, another two students also chose to study design at NID and Gandhi Fellowship to learn how to convert ideas to reality towards a better nation. A quarter of graduating MTech students are planning PhD or further graduate studies.
Twenty students from Gujarat graduated at the event. They include 16 BTech students and 4 MTech students.
This year, the Btech students received six pre-placement offers, including three offers from Goldman Sachs, two from Ricoh Innovations and one from Reliance Industries.  eClerx was the most biggest recruiter, hiring 13 students. Different sectors like Data Analytics, Fertilizer, Infrastructure, etc. also recruited IITGN students.
