Kick-Off Party: Carnival After Dark
Friday, April 25, 6:30 – 9:00 pm

Imagine a science wonderland filled with hands-on activities created just for adults. Kick-off the 2014 Festival with live science shows, music, demonstrations, and a variety of sensory stimulating stations – all tailored to grownups. Be there to tap (and taste!) the 2014 Yard’s Official Science Festival beer. Ages 21+. Tickets required. Reserve your tickets here.

The Monell table will answer two tantalizing questions:

  • Is That Red a Little Too Dry? You snagged a good deal on a new-to-you bottle of red with an intriguing minimalist label. The first sip is…extra dry, leaving you with a parched, unsatisfying mouth feel. Don’t worry! Monell sensory scientists are here to help you balance out that tannin-rich wine so you can get back to enjoying your evening.
  • Can You Imagine Life Without Smell? How much fun would life be if all your food tasted like cardboard? Come sample one of the world’s most beloved foods using only your sense of taste – no smell – and discover how much smell contributes to food appreciation.

Discovery Day: Science in Clark Park

Discover science in West Philadelphia! Meet local scientists and STEM students and experience the beauty and wonder of Clark Park in a new way. Participate in interactive, hands-on activities that illuminate the science of this iconic neighborhood park! Look for the Monell booth, where you can learn about how smell works, how your sense of smell differs from your best friend’s, and why smell loss is regarded as an invisible diability that could profoundly impact your life.

Science Crawl: Brain Games
Sunday, April 27, 4:00 pm
Check in at Indy Hall, 22 North 3rd Street

Break out your thinking cap and embark on a tour of the human brain during this four-stop science crawl in Old City. Explore the neuroscience of memory while playing games at the Continental, fine tune your motor skills at National Mechanics, and discover the connection between emotion and sweets at Shane, and more! Monell scientists will be at Shane’s Confectionery with some sweet demos to show you how taste and smell activate the limbic system, the part of your brain responsible for emotion and pleasure. West Philly Science Showcase

World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut Street

Philly tops the list of the best universities and hospitals across the country and many of these world-renowned institutions are located in West Philadelphia. Join experts from the University of Pennsylvania, University City Science Center, the Monell Chemical Senses Center and more for an enlightening discussion on the groundbreaking research being conducted in our own backyard! Monell scientist Meera Vinjamuri will describe her research on olfactory stem cells, which has implications for targeted anosmia treatment and for regenerative medicine in general. Tickets required. Beer Chemistry

Explore the science behind your favorite suds! Sample delicious beer and food pairings as Yards brewers and Monell sensory scientists pair with some of the best of Philly’s renowned food trucks to demonstrate the science behind some of our favorite food and beer combinations. ages 21+. Science Carnival on the Parkway

The festival culminates with a free all-day event featuring more than 150 exhibitors offering non-stop, family-friendly experiments, games, and a packed line-up of live entertainment and food trucks! Stop by the Monell booth (inside the Franklin Institute) to learn about computational neuroscience, how the sense of smell works, the relationship between smell and memory, and how smell loss impacts peoples lives.
