SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — June 25, 2010 —ABC-CLIO has announced the release of a suite of online reference databases for higher education. The new Academic versions of ABC-CLIO's award-winning databases bring timely, authoritative content to college and university campuses and serve the research needs of undergraduates in community colleges, as well as students in the first two years of study in four-year institutions. ABC-CLIO's electronic resources are well known within the secondary school market as reference tools. They also supplement or replace often outdated textbooks in secondary education. With content and feature changes to meet the requirements of those studying at the undergraduate level, the Academic versions of the databases enjoy the same reputation for high quality and address the demands of growing student enrollments in community colleges and undergraduate programs.

The Academic databases include a feature titled "Idea Exchange." This collection of peer-reviewed articles presents multiple perspectives on core topics and is designed to encourage deeper scholarly exploration and discussion. The articles serve as models of well-constructed argumentative essays. And, they are citable for college- and university-level research papers. Users will find current MLA 7th edition, Chicago 15th ed., and APA 6th edition citation options to help simplify the bibliographic process.

Other features of the Academic databases include regularly updated content relevant to each database's subject area, enhanced navigation capabilities to assist in locating key resources, and searching and filtering efficiencies to lead users to relevant entries quickly and precisely. Consistent with the databases designed for the secondary education market, the Academic versions also are cross-searchable and share a common user interface.

Database titles identified for release in Academic versions include:
• American Government
• American History
• Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society
• World Geography: Understanding a Changing World
• World History: Ancient and Medieval Eras
• World History: The Modern Era
• World at War: Understanding Conflict and Society
• The African American Experience
• The American Indian Experience
• The Latino American Experience
• Daily Life through History
• Pop Culture Universe: Icons, Idols, Ideas

"ABC-CLIO has a long tradition of print publishing for higher education through all of our imprints, including ABC-CLIO, Greenwood, Praeger, Libraries Unlimited, and Linworth. Releasing the academic version of our electronic databases really is the exciting next step in offering this growing segment of the education market products that will have meaningful impact on the way their students prepare and write basic research papers," said ABC-CLIO President Becky Snyder.

Concurrent with the release of the Academic versions of the databases, the publisher announced Greenwood databases, with titles in popular culture and multicultural content will migrate to the same user platform as the ABC-CLIO databases, with titles in history, geography, government, and conflict. Migration to a common platform affords cross-searching capabilities among databases. It also provides a shared interface, reducing training time for students, teachers, and library professionals.

Ms. Snyder continued, "ABC-CLIO acquired Greenwood Publishing in 2008. The migration to a common platform marks the joining together and ability to access easily the high quality content of both respected imprints."

Previews of the Academic versions of the databases as well as the new platform will be available in August 2010. The products will be available for purchase in September 2010.
