ABC-CLIO SPONSORS WINNERS OF SPENCER TUCKER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN MILITARY HISTORY AND SOCIETY FOR MILITARY HISTO
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — May 26, 2010 —The Society for Military History has named Dr. Edward M. Coffman as the recipient of the Spencer Tucker Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Military History. And, Kristen Dolan and William Taylor have been awarded research grants. The Spencer Tucker Award and the research grants are sponsored byABC-CLIOto advance the discipline of military history.
Edward M. Coffman is an active member of the military history community, culminating in his service as president of the American Military Institute (now the Society for Military History) from 1983 to 1985. Dr. Coffman served as an infantry officer with the US Army in Korea, Japan, and the United States. He taught at Memphis State University from 1957 to 1961 and was a research associate at the George C. Marshall Research Foundation in 1960-1961. In 1961, Dr. Coffman joined the History Department at the University of Wisconsin where he taught for over thirty years.
Also an accomplished author, Edward Coffman's impressive list of publications on U.S. military history include: The Old Army: A Portrait of the American Army in Peacetime, 1784-1898 and The Regulars: The American Army, 1898-1941. Dr. Coffman is now retired and lives with his wife in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Spencer Tucker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Military History was presented to Dr. Coffman by Spencer Tucker,ABC-CLIOSenior Fellow of Military History, on Friday, May 21, at a reception following the Society for Military History's Annual Conference in Virginia. A Fulbright scholar, Spencer Tucker taught history at Texas Christian University and served as an intelligence analyst and desk officer at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. He held the John Biggs Chair of Military History at the Virginia Military Institute until his retirement from teaching in 2003.
The Spencer Tucker Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of military history. Dr. Coffman was selected based on his dedication to the field and his tenure as an educator, during which he influenced thousands of students to take a strong interest in military history. Concurrently, it was announced that Kristen Dolan, a doctoral candidate in History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and William Taylor, a Ph.D. candidate in American History at George Washington University, each have been awarded anABC-CLIO/Society for Military History Research Grant. The $500 grants support scholarly research in the field of military history. Both recipients were chosen for the innovation of their research projects, as well as for clearly defining how their efforts will benefit from the grant funding.
