ACC Commends Senators Shaheen and Portman for Introducing Energy Efficiency BillWASHINGTON, D.C. (May 12, 2011)
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 12, 2011) The American Chemistry Council (ACC) today applauded Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) for introducing the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness (ESIC) Act of 2011.
As an industry that creates innovative, energy-saving materials and products, we commend Senators Shaheen and Portman for helping to ensure that energy efficiency has a prominent place on the nations energy policy agenda, saidCal Dooley, President and CEO of the American Chemistry Council. This bill contains thoughtful and effective ways to help America save energy and money while creating jobs.
Americas chemistry companies are leaders in energy efficiency. They invent and make products used in building insulation, appliances, lightweight vehicle parts, windows, engine lubricants, compact fluorescent light bulbs, energy storage systems, thermal coatings, and many others. These markets are significant, and growing.
We also know that in todays highly competitive global commerce, being energy-efficient in our own operations helps reduce costs and maintain our U.S. production and jobs. This commitment has led to a 56 percent improvement in our industrys energy efficiency since 1974, and 33 percent since 1990. Just last month, we recognized member companies for implementing energy efficiency improvements in 2010 that saved 14.8 trillion BTUs enough to power the homes of Akron, Ohios 210,000 residents for one year.
The Energy Savings Act contains important provisions to achieve energy savings across the economy. The energy building codes provision encourages more energy efficiency in new homes. It will encourage states to implement stronger codes. Meanwhile, the appliance standards provisions will help consumers reduce their utility bills while stretching the nations natural gas and electricity supplies.
The manufacturing energy efficiency program will help Americas energy-intensive industries save energy, and therefore compete more effectively in global markets. It can pave the way for additional programs to harness the potential of industrial energy efficiency.
