The following statement was released today by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity President and CEO Steve Miller after the White House announced the creation of a federal inter-agency task force on carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The task force will be led by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and will include the Environmental Protection Agency.
“Following the President’s remarks in the State of the Union last week, today’s White House announcement is yet another example of the Obama administration’s commitment to continued advances in clean coal technology. President Obama’s action demonstrates that rebuilding our nation’s economy and creating jobs will require low-cost and reliable electricity. Nearly half of our nation’s electricity is generated by American coal. It is clear that we do not need to choose between affordable, reliable energy and a clean environment. With new, advanced technology, we can have both.
“We applaud the administration for the creation of this task force and look forward to working with its members in the coming months.”
About ACCCE
The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) is a non-profit, non-partisan partnership of companies involved in producing electricity from coal. Because coal is America’s most abundant energy resource, ACCCE supports energy policies that balance coal’s vital role in meeting our country’s growing need for affordable and reliable electricity with the need to protect the environment. ACCCE also advocates for the development and deployment of advanced clean coal technologies that will produce electricity with near-zero emissions.
