WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., Nov. 17, 2010 – On Tuesday, Nov. 30, cancer physician and researcher Siddhartha Mukherjee will give the annual Andrew B. Weiss Lecture on Medicine and Medical Ethics at 8 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall at Williams College. The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture shares its title with Mukherjee's recent book, "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer." Released this month, the book has received widespread critical acclaim for its vigorous and accessible exploration of cancer and its impact on patients and physicians. "It’s hard to think of many books for a general audience that have rendered any area of modern science and technology with such intelligence, accessibility, and compassion," wrote Steven Shapin for The New Yorker.

Mukherjee is currently an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and a staff cancer physician at Columbia University Medical Center. His research focuses on developing new cancer treatments using biological innovations.

In addition to his book, Mukherjee's research has been published in Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, The New York Times, and The New Republic.

After receiving his B.A. from Stanford University, Mukherjee was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and completed a Ph.D. in immunology at the University of Oxford. He then obtained an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Mukherjee is married to the artist Sarah Sze, a professor at Columbia University's School of the Arts and a MacArthur Fellow.

The Andrew B. Weiss Lecture on Medicine and Medical Ethics was endowed by the late Andrew B. Weiss '61 and his wife Madge Weiss. It is administered by the Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
