December 23, 2008 Album Quickly Hits 2x Platinum While Usher Confesses His Love For Diamonds
WASHINGTON–AC/DC’s Black Ice on Columbia achieved Gold, Platinum and 2x Platinum status within exactly one month of its release according to the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) monthly Gold & Platinum count for November.  This is the Aussi group’s first studio album since their 2000 Platinum certified release Stiff Upper Lip.

The most coveted G &P prize of all --the Diamond Award -- went to R&B sensation Usher for his 2004 hit album Confessions that has now sold more than 10 million copies. Congratulations to the So So Def artist on his new bling and his impressive 20 million+ career album sales.

Popular rockers Linkin Park did well by receiving their first multi-Platinum selling digital single for “What I’ve Done,” certified 2x Platinum.  And congratulations to solo act Secondhand Serenade – real name John Vesely – who earned his first certification ever when his hit “Fall for You” (Glassnote Records) went Gold and Platinum.  Look for Secondhand Serenade on tour through February in cities across the country.

And on the heels of her October album release and new ardent alias, Beyonce’s first track “If I Were A Boy” reached Gold status.  This is the Columbia songstress’ sixth career Gold digital single.

A first Gold album certification went to Arista ‘Dreamgirl’ Jennifer Hudson for her self-titled debut album.  Good luck to Jennifer at the 51st Grammy Awards this February where she is nominated in four categories.

Columbia recording artist John Mayer received his second live album certification for Where the Light Is, certified Gold.  The album was recorded last December at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre during the 1st annual Holiday Charity Revue which raised funds for various Los Angeles-related charities.  Mayer’s other certified live album Any Given Thursday is currently Platinum.

Various artists can add Gold prestige to their cachet now that WOW Hits 2008 (Sparrow) has sold more than 500, 000 copies.  The WOW collection of contemporary Christian music is a perennial hit -- every WOW collection since 1996 has been certified Gold or higher.  Everyone’s thinking it so might as well say it: Wow!

December rang in five mastertone certifications for Cash Money/Universal lyricist and heavily Grammy-nominated rapper Lil Wayne.  “Lollipop” went Gold, Platinum, and 4x Platinum and “A Milli” went Gold and Platinum.  “Lollipop” is Lil Wayne’s highest certified mastertone and the highest certified ringtone thus far in 2008.

In August, the RIAA celebrated the 50th anniversary of its historic Gold Record as part of its Gold & Platinum certification program.  On August 11, 1958 Elvis was awarded his first ever RIAA Gold certification for his hit single ‘Hard Headed Woman.’  Several prominent artists from Akon to Judas Priest commented on the golden anniversary of G&P.  Read what they had to say here.

In December, the RIAA awarded a total of 23 albums, 6 digital singles and 7 mastertones.  All certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman.  Complete lists of all album, single, mastertone and video awards can also be accessed at
