December 25, 2009 (Tokyo, Japan)—Acrodea Korea, Inc. (President: Joon Hyung Kim), headquartered in Seoul, Korea, and wholly owned by Acrodea, Inc. (President: Junya Tsutsumi), headquartered in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, has developed Alive Phone Mate, a solution employing the motion portrait technology of Motion Portrait, Inc. (President: Junichi Fujita), headquartered in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo. Acrodea Korea has delivered 3D Motion Photo, a customized solution of Alive Phone Mate, to Samsung Electronics (Vice Chairman and CEO: Yoon-Woo Lee) headquartered in Suwon, Korea.

The motion portrait technology of Motion Portrait, Inc., can automatically generate a 3D model from a single, flat photograph, and automatically build facial animations that result in a variety of expressions. Through real-time rendering, the model reacts in response to user operations and creates an interactive experience. The expression engine can supply more natural, varied facial expressions.

Acrodea Korea recently developed Alive Phone Mate for mobile handsets, based on this motion portrait technology. Alive Phone Mate can automatically generate life-like 3D avatars from photos taken with the mobile telephone’s camera. The solution can generate models from one’s own or a friend’s portrait, a live pet animal, a plush-toy animal, or animation character, and broaden the entertainment range of a mobile phone. A 3D avatar thus created can render various expressions, and can react interactively to touch (tap, long tap, drag) operations of the user.

For example, the avatar can continue staring at the spot where the user’s finger was dragged on the screen. But if the screen is tapped, the avatar character may respond joyfully or by feeling ticklish instead. Otherwise, expressions in reaction may be varied; cheeks may expand, or the neck may stretch.

In addition to reacting to user operations, the avatar can relate to the mobile phone functions. The avatar stares at the battery level icon when the remaining charge is low, and nods with the vibration of the mobile phone when enabling or disabling the manner mode. In short, the reactions are life-like, and make the mobile phone seem like a living character. Users can affectionately relate to their mobile phone as a result.

Samsung has adopted Alive Phone Mate as 3D Motion Photo, implemented in the Corby (SPH-W9000) released in November 2009. 3D Motion Photo allows a selection from basic avatars, or automatic generation from a photo taken by the user. User can freely exchange their avatar character at any time. A variety of feature parts (eyewear, hairpieces, beards, backgrounds) is available for further enjoyment. The avatar can be designated for display on the idle screen, incoming call screen, and telephone directory for broader avatar usage.
