Jody Singleton, founder and CEO of Advantage Electronic Product Development, Inc. served as an expert on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) panel before over 40 represented countries at the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s 12th International Conference on Transmission and Distribution Construction, Operation, and Live-Line Maintenance, in Providence, Rhode Island. The IEEE Power & Energy Society invited Singleton to speak on the subjects of step and touch potential, a potential hazardous circumstance caused by rise in ground potential on a high-voltage work site.. Singleton was invited to discuss the most recent technologies for use in the protection of high voltage workers in a panel session on ground-potential-rise and work site shock hazards. Singleton’s area of expertise is in engineering and the technical capabilities of her firm’s wireless real-time monitoring GPR (Ground Potential Rise) safety instrument which is based upon a Department of Energy pending patent and licensed to Advantage under the government’s technology transfer program. The instrument provides knowledge of work site conditions resulting in markedly greater safety for high-voltage workers.
Conference attendees sought knowledge and expertise requisite to effectively build, operate and maintain the world’s power-delivery systems. Singleton also answered attendee questions about the GPR safety instrument during the technical program. The GPR is significant to high voltage workers because prior to development of this safety instrument, there was no accurate real-time way to monitor and log the dynamic situations of a worksite where voltage levels can exceed safety limits in high-voltage environments.
The Colorado-based electronics-engineering firm specializes in precision instrumentation development, which led to an exclusive domestic and international DOE license. Contributing their expertise Advantage created an instrument with worksite sensor and wireless communication that provides for improved high-voltage worker safety.
The IEEE Power & Energy Society audience was very responsive when shown how the instrument’s iPhone user-interface and worksite sensors that monitor in real-time alerting workers of conditions in the work environment when they may need to change actions to protect themselves.
“I am honored to be included in the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s panel and to have the opportunity to discuss leading technologies that will save lives and reduce injuries in their work environment with the ESMO attendees.” said Advantage president and CEO, Jody Singleton. The robust industrial safety instrument is designed to survive in the harsh environment of a high-voltage worksite. It utilizes ZigBee’s proven communications protocol from its sensors and a smart phone user interface. This unique combination keeps a foreman and his crew fully informed of what is happening on their worksite.
