Washington, D.C. — In the wake of a number of high-profile mass shootings in recent years, the exact scope and meaning of the Second Amendment has been at the forefront of a renewed national debate over gun laws. On Monday, July 21, the Center for American Progress will host author Michael Waldman for a discussion of his new book, The Second Amendment: A Biography, to discuss his unique perspective on the most controversial, volatile, and misunderstood provision in the Bill of Rights.

The discussion, moderated by CAP Senior Fellow Arkadi Gerney, will focus on the history of the amendment, from its beginning as a benign provision intended to calm the fears of the citizens of a new republic through the radicalization of the National Rifle Association, or NRA, and its fierce campaign to create constitutional protections for gun ownership. The book also explains the modern debate over guns, which has been characterized by intransigence at the state and federal levels for years.
