Flanagan, who will compete in this year’s TCS New York City Marathon as an NYRR Team for Kids Ambassador, will serve as a “race buddy” for NYRR’s Run for the Future summer running program

Four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan will join 85 high school girls from NYC’s five boroughs for a 5K in Harlem this Saturday. Flanagan will be a “race buddy” for NYRR’s Run for the Future summer running program, helping a new, young runner complete her first race.
NYRR Run for the Future provides a fun, free way for young women entering their senior year of high school to learn about running while building self-esteem, training to complete a 5K run, and earning a $2000 college scholarship.
Flanagan, the second-fastest U.S. female marathoner of all-time, finished as the runner-up at the 2010 New York City Marathon, the best finish by an American woman in 27 years.
The Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run and Walk honors the late Percy Sutton, who as Manhattan borough president in the 1970s championed the New York City Marathon as a five-borough race. The run celebrates historic Harlem and is part of HARLEM WEEK, one of the northeast area's largest cultural celebrations.
Saturday, August 26, 8:30 a.m.
Start: 136th Street and Edgecombe Avenue
Finish: St. Nicholas Avenue at approximately 138th Street, near the Percy E. Sutton Education Complex
