On Saturday, 2012 January 28, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s (AECL) Community Affairs Officer Shelley Rolland-Poruks was honoured at the Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce

Chalk River, 2012 January 30— On Saturday, 2012 January 28, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s (AECL) Community Affairs Officer Shelley Rolland-Poruks was honoured at the Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce (UOVCC) Awards Gala and named the 2011 Citizen of the Year for her work in the community.

Shelley Rolland-Poruks is a strong advocate for the economic and social development of the Ottawa Valley. Mrs. Rolland-Poruks stated “I am truly thrilled to have been presented this award. I believe that the Ottawa Valley has much to offer its residents and businesses. I am proud of the work that occurs at the Nuclear Laboratories and I am happy that I have a job which allows me to connect AECL with the community.”

Shelley has lived in the community for four years and as part of her role as AECL’s Community Affairs Officer has partnered with many community organizations. For example, she was instrumental in helping to merge the Deep River & District Chamber of Commerce with the UOVCC, hoping to further advance economic partnerships in the area.

Shelley is an avid volunteer with business and community organizations throughout the Valley. Some of which include the North Renfrew Family Health Team Advisory Committee, the Renfrew County United Way, the Deep River Community Action Network, and the Women in Nuclear-Canada Eastern Ontario Chapter.

AECL was also recognized as a finalist for their efforts in promoting the skilled trades in the Ottawa Valley.  AECL is a founding member of the OPTIONS Skilled Trades Fair and has participated in the fair for the past 10 years.  AECL has always been a strong supporter of co-op and apprenticeship opportunities at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).  In 2010 and 2011, AECL with the assistance of the Women in Nuclear-Canada Eastern Ontario Chapter, brought the “Skills Work for Women Networking Dinner” to Pembroke, further enhancing support and awareness for women in trades in the Upper Ottawa Valley.
