A number of leading UK modelling agencies are in the process of ramping up their advisories in response to an increasing number of scams

London, England, 2nd Feb 2011 – The rise in technology has not only benefitted the consumer and also online business it has also allowed the unscrupulous another medium to deceive and cheat in order to gain commercially.

A spokesperson from one of London’s leading modelling agencies explains, ‘In the past couple of years we have received a number of complaints from prospective models who have been duped by internet advertisements and also through social networking sites. This is in contrast to the scams of the 1990’s which mainly originated from advertisements in newspapers and magazines. These scam modelling agencies will generally promise a potential model the world, gain their trust, take a considerable deposit for one reason or another and then disappear without a trace. The action we are taking now by way of information on our website aims to inform people of the unscrupulous operators out there and how to avoid falling into their clutches.’

The online phenomenon has brought a great deal of convenience to almost everyone in terms of information and e-commerce but unfortunately it does have a dark side. There are several well documented cases of people being defrauded online in many different ways and unfortunately and devastatingly for some UK modelling scams are no exception.

Our spokesperson goes onto say, ‘Just because a company has a website and a presence on the leading social networking sites it does not make them trustworthy or legitimate. Longstanding and reputable modelling agencies would never directly approach a prospective model via the social networking sites and certainly not fill them with false expectations. A good rule of thumb is that if it seems too good to be true then it very probably is so we would advise people to research carefully before entering into any discussions with anyone that professes to come from a modelling agency.’

The victims of online scams that originate from the social networking sites are usually quite young as the people that utilise these applications are usually young. Whether the advice of the modelling agencies will be heeded remains to be seen but the advisory information is available on many of the leading agencies websites.

Our spokesperson finishes by saying, ‘Although the scams perpetuated online are becoming increasingly more sophisticated we hope the information we have published and will continue to publish will give people an insight into the warning signs and ultimately prevent them from being scammed of both their money and also their dreams.’
