Campaign part of global sustainability program aimedat encouraging innovative efforts to deploy more energy-efficientnetworks
Paris, April 20, 2009 -Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU)is launching several initiatives during Earth Week (April 19 to 25) tospotlight its efforts toward reducing the company’s carbon footprint and toestablish an eco-attitude throughout its global operations. Among theactivities being launched is an extensive eco-sustainability awareness campaign- “Let’s Be Eco-Friendly” - that will encourage Alcatel-Lucent employees toavoid printing documents, separate trash for recycling, save water, turn downthermostats, use teleconferencing to avoid travel, reduce commuting by carwhenever possible. As an example, the 2008 Financial and Corporate SocialResponsibility (CSR) annual reports will be available online, with paper copiesonly available on request. The paper saved would be enough to create a stack astall as a 40-story building.
“Earth Week is a great way to call attention to everyone’s responsibility tomitigate the impact we, as a company and individually are having on our planet.Alcatel-Lucent’s long standing approach to eco-sustainability combines businessgoals with corporate responsibilities. It means creating exceptional value forour customers, shareholders and employees through the relevant eco friendlycommunications solutions as well as providing respect for the naturalenvironment and the people and communities where we do business,” said CarolineGuillaumin, Alcatel-Lucent senior Vice President, Communications and CorporateSocial Responsibility. “That’s why we established our comprehensiveeco-sustainability program several years ago, but we know we need to keepreinforcing that program to ensure that we can meet the major challengesahead.”
The company’s comprehensive eco-sustainability program focuses on threeareas:
Alcatel-Lucent products are thoroughly evaluated for energy efficiency toensure they support service providers’ efforts to reduce the carbon emissionsof existing and new networks. In February, Alcatel-Lucent announced it haddemonstrated in China that dynamic power enhancements to its GSM/EDGE mobilenetworking portfolio can reduce power consumption by up to 27 percent, offeringdramatic energy and cost savings for mobile operators. The company also hasdeployed some 300 solar-powered base stations and has established a uniquealternate energy lab and pilot site at its Villarceaux, France facility.
Alcatel-Lucent’s scientists and engineers are creating innovative solutionsand services that enable significant environmental benefits in differentbusiness sectors with such techniques as smart metering, smart buildings, smarttransport and tele-working.
And there is increasing focus at Alcatel-Lucent facilities around the worldto ensure that Alcatel-Lucent operations have effective recycling programs,energy-use reduction initiatives and careful hazardous waste managementsystems. Through a global, cross-functional “caring for climate” program, thecompany has calculated its first comprehensive measurement of its carbonfootprint (greenhouse gas emissions) for all of its buildings and operationsworldwide, including business travel, and will be reporting on that when itissues its CSR report in May. It has also established a web tool that tells itsNorth American employees booking airplane trips how much carbon dioxide theywill generate when they take that trip.
Finally the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation is launching a cell phone recyclingprogram beginning with the United States, Canada and France. The Foundation isworking with Charitable Recycling, an organization based in Bloomfield Hills,Mich., to recycle old cell phones to help the environment and those who needemergency communication.
