Alcatel-Lucent reaffirms its leadership in the global WiMAX Rev-e market at WiMAX World event

Chicago, September 30, 2008– At the WiMAX World Americas 2008 tradeshow and exhibition today Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) isreaffirming its leadership in the worldwide market for WiMAX 802.16e (Rev-e)wireless broadband infrastructure, having secured more commercial agreementsthan any other vendor. Alcatel-Lucent comes into the marquee event with strongworldwide commercial momentum, having secured five new contract wins sincemid-year –- including VTEL in Georgia and Delta Telecom in Azerbaijan --bringing its industry-leading tally of commercial deployment agreements to30.

Of these Rev-e network deployments, four are already in commercial service,and that number is expected to double by year-end.

“Alcatel-Lucent has now shipped nearly 9,000 Rev-e base stations and alreadyhas enough equipment in service to support more than half a million wirelessbroadband subscribers on five continents,” said Karim El Naggar, Vice Presidentand head of Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX activities. "Rev-e technology has movedinto a new phase of commercial maturity, with our customers realizing revenuefrom services supported by stable, industrialized Wave 2-ready mobile WiMAXinfrastructure.”

The event comes as Alcatel-Lucent’s leadership in the fast-solidifyingMobile WiMAX sector garners wide industry recognition. Infonetics Researchpublished a report in September noting that Alcatel-Lucent was in the top tierof Mobile WiMAX vendors and pulling away from the rest of the pack, confirmingearlier analyses by industry analysts at Current Analysis and IDC. “The bigWiMAX story of the quarter is the huge ramp-up in mobile WiMAX equipmentrevenues by Alcatel-Lucent, which more than doubled its revenue in 2Q08,” saidthe report authored by Infonetics analyst Richard Webb.

As a result of its strong market position, Alcatel-Lucent also hasestablished itself as a key driver of the development of the WiMAX ecosystem,with its Open Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) Program becoming one of theindustry’s premiere showcases and test-beds for WiMAX terminals from many ofthe world’s leading WiMAX device vendors.

To further enrich the WiMAX eco-system, Alcatel-Lucent today announced thenew Alcatel-Lucent Seal of Interoperability Acceptance for Commercial Services(SIACS), a stamp of approval for terminal devices successfully completingAlcatel-Lucent’s rigorous interoperability testing regime. Devices featuringboth MIMO and beam forming from Accton, Quanta, Siemens and ZyXEL have allreceived the Alcatel-Lucent SIACS.

At its booth on the WiMAX World exhibition floor, Alcatel-Lucent is leveraginglive Mobile WiMAX connections to showcase commercial services its customershave launched. Through videoconferences with customers in the Netherlands(Worldmax), Malaysia (PacketOne) and the Dominican Republic (ONEMAX), visitorswill be able to learn from these operators’ experiences with radio deployment,end-to-end network architectures, and putting together a compelling retailoffer. The booth also highlights the rapid expansion of Alcatel-Lucent’s OpenCPE Program as a whole, providing a close-up look at the latest devices from 30partners worldwide – as well as a direct connection to Alcatel-Lucent’sInteroperability Testing Center in Taipei.
