L’ANSE Mich.--Dec. 26, 2013--The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded a $1,000 grant to the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Michigan Chapter to help fund LiveWISE, a 12-week program aimed to empower those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.

The program, which began in September, hosts nine sessions that include speakers, physical exercise and training to offer caregivers a broader range of knowledge and skills. According to Ruth Almen, regional director, the program also works to combat the stigma associated with the disease and encourage early detection.

“We want to encourage patients and family members to continue to live an active lifestyle,” said Almen. “Thanks to the help of the Plum Creek Foundation, we can empower early Alzheimer’s patients to participate in the decision-making process of their life.”

The collaborative program will be managed by doctors, social workers and lifestyle coaches to create a supportive network of care. Sessions will accommodate 15-20 participants at a time. Each session offers a speaker addressing key issues affecting Alzheimer’s patients and their families. Session topics include: Crisis Planning and Safety, Pain and Fatigue, Community Resources, Ask the Doctors, Stress Reduction and more.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s mission is to eliminate the Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
