AMIA Presents Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, FACMI, with Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award

BETHESDA, MD – The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) honored Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, FACMI, with the Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award, presented during AMIA’s Annual Symposium, Nov. 14 – 18 in San Francisco. 

The Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award recognizes an individual’s distinguished career and significant impact on the care of patients and the discipline of nursing. The award honors a professional with exemplary principles and practices and a substantial record of contribution to the field of nursing informatics.

Chan School of Public Health. "We congratulate Dr. Brennan on her exceptional accomplishments and thank her for her commitment to AMIA's mission.”  

Dr. Brennan is the Lillian L. Moehlman Bascom Professor, School of Nursing and College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following seven years of clinical practice in critical care nursing and psychiatric nursing, Dr. Brennan held several academic positions. She developed the ComputerLink, an electronic network designed to reduce isolation and improve self-care among home care patients. Dr. Brennan directed HeartCare, a web-based tailored information and communication service that helped home-dwelling cardiac patients recover faster and with fewer symptoms. She directed Project HealthDesign, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded initiative designed to stimulate the next generation of personal health records. She also conducts external evaluations of novel health information technology architectures,  and works to repurpose engineering methods for healthcare purposes. Dr. Brennan leads the Living Environments Laboratory at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, which includes a 6-sided virtual reality CAVE that her group uses to re-create visually every environment on earth, and develop new ways for effective visualization of high dimensional data.  Supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality,  her vizHOME group explores the impact of household contexts on personal health information management.

Dr. Brennan received a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a holds a doctorate in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

AMIA’s Annual Symposium is the premier educational event in the field. The symposium presents leading-edge scientific research on biomedical and health informatics and over 100 scientific sessions. The Symposium presents work from across the spectrum of the informatics field -- translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, clinical informatics, consumer health informatics and public health informatics.
