Last year, Terre des hommes (Tdh) led 103 projects to improve the health and protection of vulnerable children in 36 different countries. The number of beneficiaries has increased constantly for five years and reached 2.4 million in 2013. The expansion of the mother and child health and nutrition projects in Burkina Faso, Bangladesh and Guinea contributed largely to this increase. For the first time, Tdh is able to communicate precisely on the gender of the children monitored individually: 48.6% are boys and 51.4% are girls. Almost 70,000 people in the field benefited from continuous training and thus contributed greatly to the implementation of projects. These encouraging results were achieved thanks to the work of 1,800 employees in the field and at the headquarters in Switzerland.
Quality and transparency.
To ensure the effectiveness and relevance of its actions, Tdh monitors the quality of the planning process and the implementation of humanitarian aid or development aid projects. Compliance with accounting standards as well as the management of security risks and child abuse are an integral part of its transparent and responsible operation.
In 2013, the Terre des hommes Foundation recorded a total income of 67.5 million Swiss francs (CHF) compared to CHF 59.5 million in 2012 (+ 13.5%). Costs have increased to CHF 64.9 million in 2013 (+5.9% compared to 2012). 87% of the expenses are directly spent on projects to help children in 36 countries, as well as on raising public awareness on children’s rights and child protection. Fundraising and communication correspond to 8% of the total expenditure and general administrative costs represent 5% of the expenses. Donations from the general public and semi-institutional donations came up to a total of CHF 28.7 million, 43% of the income. Other income (57%) came from institutional donors, CHF 38.8 million.
Children and their relatives could not have been helped without the unwavering support of our partner organisations, institutions, sponsors and donors, as well as our 1,400 volunteers spread throughout Switzerland. Thank you for helping us give a chance to every child.
