Express Instrument Hire Ltd in Preston has seen sales grow by 15 per cent over the past two years despite the backdrop of the recession, with APC Overnight helping deliver its success. The electrical and electronics test equipment hire company relies on the nationwide next day delivery network to reach customers throughout the UK and the Irish Republic. Its customers range from sole traders to the chief engineers of major national and multinational companies including Shell, British Airways, Marks & Spencer and Toyota, to name just a few.



“APC Overnight is integral to our business as it handles all of our deliveries and returns. We have a strong working relationship with the local depot in Preston [ABC Limited] and we have always found the service to be very reliable. Reliability is crucial because at least 95 per cent of our equipment is delivered to engineers working onsite in locations throughout the UK and Ireland, and engineers' time is valuable. We must get equipment to them on time to avoid additional costs to their customers – and that’s where APC fits in,” says Lee Myers, Sales Manager, Express Instrument Hire Ltd.



The company books collections using an advanced web-based system (NetDespatch) supplied by APC. This also prints the despatch labels that contain detailed delivery notes to help the courier locate the right person in the right place to hand over the equipment. Lee Myers reports that this is particularly useful as engineers may be working in very large sites. The system also allows the company to track timed deliveries and answer customer queries.



“We have great confidence in the APC service and that comes through dealing with the people at the local depot. The customer-orientated ethos of the company mirrors our own business. It appears that throughout the network there is a consistent approach to service, which is important, as the delivery driver is the face of our business. Also, proactive communications mean we are never left wondering about our deliveries and on the rare occasion that a delivery will be delayed we know about it as soon as possible,” says Lee Myers.
