A Carpentry and Joinery apprentice from Ayr College is looking forward to a bright future after a double award win, receiving one of his awards from none other than Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy.

Edward Cole from Ayr won a silver medal at the Scottish heats of the prestigious Worldskills UK Skillbuild competition held at Dumfries and Galloway College. The twenty year old competed against 16 other apprentices from across Scotland to impress the judges with his construction of roof joints to clinch the silver medal, and was presented with his medal by Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy, and Minister for Schools and Skills Maureen Watt MSP at a recent ceremony in Perth.

Continuing his award-winning run, Edward, who works for South Ayrshire Council, also received the Carpentry and Joinery Student of the Year Award at a ceremony at Ayr Town Hall last week, in recognition of his dedication and hard work.

Edward said: “It’s great to receive these awards and shows that my hard work is paying off. I’ve really enjoyed coming to college because I learned different aspects of joinery that I was not doing in my job such as roofing and machining, and my learning experience has given me the confidence to work on my own and make decisions.”

Graeme Donaldson, Carpentry and Joinery Lecturer at Ayr College, said: “In achieving both these awards, Edward has shown excellent practical skills and has a great attitude to learning. His dedication and commitment will ensure that he has a bright future ahead of him as a joiner.”
