The modern classic intertwines the plots of Grimms' fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes. The main characters are taken from stories such as, "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Rapunzel," and "Cinderella," as well as others. The musical ties together a story involving a childless baker, his wife, and their pursuit to begin a family, as they interact with a witch and other storybook characters during their quest.

Sondheim and Lapine's Into the Woods is a timeless, relevant piece, receiving best score, best book, and best actress in a musical. The APU production is staged and directed by DJ Gray, with music direction by Ronda Rubio featuring a 17-piece orchestra.

Gray is an experienced performer, director, and choreographer with an extensive career ranging from dancing on Broadway to choreographing for theater and television. Her work has been featured on the Tony Awards, Comedy Central, and NBC Television.

"Into the Woods is a cautionary tale about love, loss, values, and responsibilities," said Gray. "The show inspires hope and healing."

Azusa Pacific University Theater presents four stage productions for the 2017-18 season, featuring a combination of comedy, drama, and musical performances. For more information, visit the theater’s website.
