Coffs Harbour is gearing up for the largest gathering of surfers in the country when the Australian Surf Festival is held from August 1-18.

Almost 400 surfers from around Australia will contest the two-week surfing festival.

National titles will be decided in Open Surf Masters, Single Fin, Longboard and Logger divisions. This year will also see the introduction of the inaugural Wahu Australian Bodyboard Titles.

Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser, said the Australian Surf Festival is the perfect event to be held on the pristine Coffs Coast beaches.

“The NSW Government is proud to be supporting the Australian Surf Festival until 2016, through our tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, as part of a fantastic year-round line-up of surfing events on our State’s coast,” he said.

“The Australian Surf Festival will bring competitors and spectators from across Australia to Coffs Harbour during what is traditionally a low season, which is great for the local economy, and it gives visitors the opportunity to experience the excellent surfing conditions and visitor attractions here on the Coffs Coast.”

Coffs Harbour City Council Mayor Denise Knight said the festival is an important feature of the region’s calendar.

“The 2014 Australian Surfing Festival is an enormous event for us, with the crowning of many National Surfing Titles featuring some of the best surfers in Australia,” she said.

“The Coffs Coast on the Mid North Coast of NSW is an ideal location, with a diverse range of surfing locations to suit most conditions, a strong history of holding National and State surfing titles and many other events in the region.”

Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon said spectators would be treated to a fantastic level of surfing for the entire two weeks.

“Some of Australia’s best surfing talent across several disciplines of surfing will converge on Coffs Harbour for the Australian Surf Festival,” he said.

“The likes of Harley Ingleby, Rob Page and Glenn Pringle who all had stellar professional careers are psyched on winning a coveted Australian Title. It will be two weeks of non-stop action and well worth a visit to the beautiful Coffs Coast.”

Coffs Harbour is home to a number of great beach break options that work in a variety of wind and swell conditions. The main base for the event will be Park Beach which is located north east of the Coffs Harbour CBD. The event is fully mobile in the Coffs Harbour region with numerous beach break options which include Park Beach, Macauley’s Beach, Diggers Beach, Jetty Beach, Gallows, Arrawarra Beach, Mulloway Beach, Woolgoolga Beach, Emerald Beach and Sapphire Beach.

A hotline - 0458 247 212 - will be operating for the festival which will feature a recorded message updated at 6:45am each morning with the confirmed daily schedule and contest venue.

The official opening ceremony will be held on August 1 at 4pm at Hoey Moey, 84 Ocean Parade, Coffs Harbour.
