Autism Canada, the national voice for families and individuals on the autism spectrum, announced today a partnership with ICE4Autism – the only autism-specific in case of emergency (ICE) mobile app. As a care sponsor, ICE4Autism has pledged 10% of all Canadian sales proceeds to further Autism Canada’s mission of ensuring people on the autism spectrum and their families have full, healthy and happy lives.

London, Ontario, Candada. December 23, 2015 - (PressReleasePoint) - The communication, sensory and behavioral differences commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), coupled with the varied - and often limited - understanding of ASD amongst first responders and emergency department practitioners, result in the inappropriate and sometimes overly harsh treatment of those with the disorder in emergency situations.

ICE4Autism offers a singular solution to the barriers to proper care experienced by those with an ASD,” said Wanda Refaely, who conceived and developed the mobile app. “ICE4Autism stores vital information about the autistic individual’s unique needs, sensitivities and behaviours directly on their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch making it immediately accessible to first responders, ER doctors and nurses. Rather than generalizations, such as ‘this person may not respond’ or ‘may be sensitive to bright lights’, ICE4Autism provides actionable, person-specific information quickly and efficiently affording a more needs-conscious and aware response.”

“Autism Canada is extremely proud to be partnering with ICE4Autism and we are grateful for their commitment to the autism community,” said Laurie Mawlam, Executive Director, Autism Canada. “The ability to communicate our needs in the midst of an emergency is challenging for everyone, and even more so for those with autism. The ICE4Autism app represents a cost effective and easy-to-use practical tool to overcome some of the major obstacles to needs-aware emergency and general care for those with an ASD.”

In July 2015, ICE4Autism was awarded the exclusive BEST of ICE designation. Bob Brotchie, founder of the ICE concept and international campaign, described ICE4Autism as “a critical piece of the ICE – In Case of Emergency – jigsaw…Affordable, intuitive, respectful - and most of all - of value, this App is a game-changer for anyone who has the potential to experience difficulties communicating their needs in the emergency scenario.”
