An Aviemore-based business and a local graduate are both enjoying new success in their 25th year thanks to The Highland Council’s Graduate Placement Programme and Business Gateway Highland’s recruitment advisory service.
People Positive is a performance coaching consultancy with headquarters in Aviemore. The business recently hired a 25-year-old graduate through the Graduate Placement Programme to help them complete a 25th anniversary rebranding project. Following the success of the project, they have now offered their new recruit a permanent contract.
The Graduate Placement Programme, which is funded by The Highland Council and delivered by Business Gateway Highland, aims to help local companies recruit a graduate to assist them in delivering a specific project. It funds up to 50 per cent of a graduate’s salary for between 6 and 12 months (maximum grant of £8,150).
Gayle MacLean, 25, from Inverness, graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Masters in Media Management after completing a BA degree in English Studies at Stirling University. Originally hired to help Positive People undertake a vital rebrand, including a redesign of their website (www.peoplepositive.com) Gayle impressed them so much that she is now working for the company permanently.
With its headquarters in Aviemore, People Positive also has offices in Houston, USA and Perth, Western Australia. Its consultants operate globally in the oil and gas, utility, and rail sectors offering a diverse range of tailor-made programmes.
Helen Walker, Finance Manager at People Positive said: “I would recommend the Graduate Placement Programme to other businesses in the area as it has been a very successful experience. Right from the outset, the process was straight forward – from submitting our application for funding, to funding approval, to ongoing financial transactions throughout the year. Emma, the Recruitment Adviser with Business Gateway, was very helpful and seamlessly assisted us with the whole process: from advertising through to recruiting the right candidate.”
The company decided to apply for the graduate scheme because they had identified a specific project which existing staff had been too busy operationally to devote time to. There was a need to have someone with the necessary skills and time who could see this project through to completion.
Helen added: “We originally employed Gayle as we were rebranding and needed someone to properly devote time to it as we were too busy operationally with the day to day aspects of running a global business. Initially the project ran for 6 months while Gayle liaised with the design company and the website programmer and developer. We then extended it to 12 months as the job was larger than we had originally estimated it to be. At the end of the 12 month placement, Gayle joined us permanently as full-time support to the operational team.”
Emma Lawson, Recruitment Adviser, Business Gateway said: “People Positive are a forward-thinking company. They knew that re-branding was important for building on the success of the company in the global marketplace, and they also recognised the unique value of the Graduate Placement Programme and recruitment advisory service for helping them do so. Through the grant, and our support and practical guidance, the business was able to recruit the right graduate for them and add the new skills they needed to their organisation. It’s great to see businesses in the area providing positions for graduates, and we are really pleased that Gayle has made such a big contribution to People Positive during her Graduate Placement. It’s fantastic that she will now be able to continue doing so with her new permanent contract.”
