The small village of Andermatt stands for Alpine Chic: encircled by snow-covered mountains, the place at the foot of the Gotthard massif has retained its romantic ambience. Since Christmas 2013, the 5-Star-Superior Hotel The Chedi Andermatt has been at the heart of a new and exclusive resort. Probably the most expensive and most exclusive hotel in the Alps, the property is the first for the international, Singapore-based GHM Group in Switzerland. Both on the outside and in the interior of the hotel, the architects and designers selected materials and products that combine traditional and contemporary aspects harmoniously – accordingly, they opted for shower sets, mixers and thermostats from the Axor® Starck collection.
Bathroom culture featuring iconic objects by Philippe Starck
Fashions come and go, but the timeless designs by Philippe Starck have outlasted them all, always with an eye on the essentials. The minimalist style of the mixers connotes archetypal forms of water usage and gives them their attractive shape. In this way, the bathroom collection from Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe SE, matches perfectly with the design philosophy of The Chedi Andermatt, which seeks to combine luxury with a natural appearance in a classic, timeless manner. This is underscored by the collection’s wash basin mixers and the floor-mounted single-lever bathtub mixers with the characteristic joystick levers. The focus on water as a life elixir and the functionality of use continues in the clean geometry ofthe Axor Starck X flush-mounted thermostats, which are installed in the showers along with Axor Starck shower sets.
Embedded in the natural environment
At the The Chedi Andermatt, the famous architectural firm Dennison International Architects & Planers, headed by Jean-Michel Gathy, harmoniously combined a number of different styles: the contemporary architecture emphasizes Alpine accents by featuring gable roofs and dormer windows, and by using locallysourced construction materials, such as lumber and stone. Inviting upholstered and leather armchairs contrast with natural stone and wood paneling, while open fireplaces crackle away in the background. A particularly arresting feature in the restaurant is the five-meter high glass humidor for the cheese specialties.
Alpine coziness and comfort
The clever combination of the traditional and the contemporary is evident in many parts of the hotel: at the check-in guests are welcomed in an atmosphere akin to a living room equipped with a bar, which seamlessly merges with a lounge; the recessed balconies in the rooms and residences reference Alpine building styles with their wooden blinds; prominent wood features meet contemporary architecture in the open-plan layouts, where the living, sleeping and bathroom spaces blend into each other. In its design philosophy the The Chedi Andermatt again echoes one of Axor’s own guiding principles, which is to contribute to a new understanding of the bathroom and to develop it further into a living space.
Aside from the 169 rooms, suites and residences, The Chedi Andermatt also offers an exceptionally large 35-meter swimming pool and an extensive wellness, beauty and fitness area – all before a panoramic backdrop of mountain peaks reaching almost 3000 meters.
