February 2014 - As the baby-boom generation grows older, the risk in getting an Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diagnosis is substantial, and loved-ones of those afflicted turn into very stressed and active caregivers desperately searching for their new normal.  From dealing with financial and legal matters to safety concerns, a caregiver’s life is no easy feat.  Now, welcome CareGround, a novel site for caregivers searching for professional resources, information and much-needed support.

Having recently launched, CareGround features a smart and comprehensive directory of service providers specializing in elder care and dementia. These providers are searchable by location and type of service.  Beyond this database, caregivers have the ability to connect with others via sophisticated social networking tools and editorial discourse.  The CareGround model is based on the adage ‘It takes a village to care for those you love’, and the fundamental idea is to vastly facilitate the care-giving experience through resources, and camaraderie.

With extensive business and entrepreneurial experience, CareGround’s co-founders, Jessica Nelson and Errol Antzis, conceptualized this online space as being highly utilized by caregivers to help navigate the murky waters of elder care-giving.  “Being a caregiver for my mother who was diagnosed with early onset Frontotemporal Degeneration, and every stage of her illness has posed tremendous challenges.  There was not one online destination that could help with all those care-giving needs, and CareGround was really derived from a personal experience”, says Jessica.  And like Jessica, there are many caregivers who find the challenges and lack of resources difficult to overcome.

“CareGround is a site that will foster a sense of community and connectedness in the fight for dementia awareness and eldercare,’, says Errol.  ‘”CareGround's foundation touches a critical need for attention in this space as the numbers of those afflicted with dementia grow exponentially, and CareGround hopes to solve a lot of the issues with regard to unreliable and disparate information that’s out on the circuit right now”, continues Errol.

A CareGround membership – which is free with sign up – delivers many perks for caregivers.  Members can widely interact with other members across various platforms such as forums, save preferred service providers in a program called ‘CareTeam’, and create their own circle of supporters and friends within ‘Village’.  “Whether you are part of the sandwich generation or not, being a caregiver is incredibly demanding.  CareGround hopes to alleviate much of the care-giving challenges with relevant resources that are reliable and credible”, says Jessica.
