Baker College of Allen Park Awards Ed Kurtz Scholarship to Carrie Joseph
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Officials at Baker College of Allen Park have announced Carrie Joseph as the recipient of the 2009 Ed Kurtz Leadership Scholarship award. Joseph received a $2,500 scholarship that is awarded to a Baker student who demonstrates academic achievement and either a commitment to community service or a successful balance of work, family and school obligations.
“Carrie’s scholastic achievement, extensive community service involvement and successful balance of family and school obligations made her the ideal candidate for this year’s award,” said Aaron J. Maike, Baker College of Allen Park president.
Joseph, a full-time student at Baker College of Allen Park, expects to graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in human service. A single mother, she is a Sunday school teacher, a program leader for at-risk teens, and a community representative for the Department of Human Services and for the Guidance Center, a behavioral health and human services organization dedicated to the mental well-being of children, adults and families in southeast Michigan.
Joseph, a Taylor resident, currently carries a 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
Baker College established this scholarship in 2004 in honor of Ed Kurtz, retired president and CEO of Baker College. Kurtz, a dynamic leader whose vocabulary does not include the word “impossible,” also exhibited extraordinary service to his neighbors, friends and community throughout his 34 years at Baker College. The Ed Kurtz Scholarship fund honors the efforts of Baker students who exemplify Ed’s leadership style and who serve their communities as leaders and volunteers or balance work and family obligations.
The largest private college in Michigan, Baker College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It is a non-profit higher education institution, serving more than 38,000 students on 12 campuses and in four satellite locations. Baker grants certificates and associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in business, health sciences, education and human services, and various technical fields, as well as a doctorate of business administration. As a career college, the Baker College system is proud to have achieved a graduate employment rate of 98 percent. For more information about Baker College, please check out our Web site at
