Barco introduces a new screen technology for its OverView OL/OLS series LED-lit rear-projection video walls. These extremely robust screens are not sensitive to temperature or humidity changes, which means that the traditional screen gaps between cubes to deal with expansions are no longer necessary. NoGap screens therefore touch each other, delivering a smooth videowall image with very limited interruptions. Furthermore, the hard surface is 100% proof to touches, bumps, and vibrations, and is even certified to resist earthquakes.
'Extremely robust' does not simply imply the screens are very difficult to break. It also means they can be cleaned very thoroughly, without risking permanent damage as is the case with most contemporary screen types. While testing, we have even applied permanent marker on the NoGap screens. It could be removed, using all necessary cleaning agents, without leaving a stain or a scratch.
Does this additional strength affect the video wall's performance compared to the previous screen models? No, not at all. NoGap screens feature similar active optical layers, same peak gain, same half gain angles, and the same gain curve. The black level with ambient light is even slightly better than before. Visually, it's hard to tell the difference between the NoGap screens and the traditional screens. You'll only notice it when things get rough...
"We are really excited to introduce these new screens, because the enthusiasm within the team is peaking," says Peter Baumgärtner, Product manager video walls at Barco. "It is hard to think of a scenario in which the screen would be damaged - it even survived a ball drop test (1kg/1m) without breakage, and is certified against earthquakes. Furthermore, because the screens are not sensitive to heat and humidity, they will not deform when the room's air conditioning suddenly fails. This allows us to present the video wall with the smallest gap in the competitive field, demonstrating our leadership in screen technology."
The NoGap technology screens will become standard for the OL/OLS series rear-projection video walls; Barco's other cube models will follow later in 2014. You can discover these new screens - and more of Barco's innovations - at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) tradeshow in Amsterdam. You will find Barco in Hall 11, booths #F78 and #H75.
