BARMER: Launch of the Personal Health Record

The time has come: From today, seven million BARMER members nationwide can use a personal health record to collect all their relevant health information. "This is a totally new approach to patient information. In a three-year research study, our members can profit from a personally maintained online record for the first time", explains Birgit Fischer, BARMER deputy CEO. Currently, there were many discussions about the handling of health information. However, the patients' point of view hardly played a role so far. "This is why we will investigate the patient’s benefits of a personal health record for the first time", Fischer continues.

Among other features, the personal health record provides a reminder service for medical appointments and preventive medical exams, a library with a vast store of health information and a drug interaction check. The BARMER personal health record is an interesting option for everyone. Families with children profit from this "electronic health memory" just as chronically ill patients, family caregivers, health conscious people or senior citizens who travel frequently. All that is needed to use the personal health record is Internet access. Registration is open at www.barmer.de/gesundheitsakte. There, additional information is also available.

Data integrity and protection adhere to the highest standards. The underlying LifeSensor application by eHealth specialist InterComponentWare (ICW) was recently awarded the data protection seal of approval "ips" (internet privacy standards) for the third time. BARMER insurants can obtain the personal health record at a special rate of 23.80 euros per year for members and 11.90 euros for family members. This is merely a fraction of the costs normally charged for personal health records.
