Battelle to Assess Franklin County (Ohio) Emergency Communication Needs

COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 10, 2014)—Battelle and Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security are working together to ensure a new mass warning and notification system meets the needs of 42 jurisdictions and emergency partners in Franklin County.

In order to achieve that buy-in, mayors and chief information officers from Obetz to Sharon Township—and everything in between—will participate in focus groups designed to illustrate the requirements of their specific jurisdictions.

Mass warning and notification systems are increasingly used in the emergency response community to notify residents of all hazards including severe weather and hazardous material spills. 

A mass notification system can reach residents in the form of social media platforms, phone and text messages as well as email. Representatives from the county will share with planners which methods might work best in their communities. Other considerations include preferred languages, mechanisms to reach the hearing and vision impaired, and other special needs within the various communities.

The work will be performed under a contract with Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security during the next few months.

The system will enhance Franklin County’s capability to be better prepared for, ready to respond to and recover from any emergency.”
