Washington, D.C. - Jason Grumet, president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, issued the following statement commenting on the letter sent by Republican leadership in the House of Representatives to the president, following his State of the Union address, expressing optimism in addressing policy areas where bipartisanship can be reached:

“Republican leadership in the House should be commended for taking the president at his word and following through with a list of concrete policy recommendations where Republicans and Democrats can work together. It is promising to see both parties put forth real solutions and policy recommendations with the hopes of reaching agreement across the aisle.

“The president opened the door to finding common ground in his speech. He should take this offer at face value and continue that process.

“While sharing similar goals, House Republicans understandably have a very different vision on how to achieve policy compared to their Democratic counterparts. However, it is encouraging to see our political leaders use this as an opportunity to make real progress. These moves toward bipartisanship are encouraging and can make 2014 a year of action.”
