Novelist Kharis Macey’s exotic family saga, slowly and skillfully reveals the tangled Simpson family relationships –the love, hate and greed they fostered, as an unrepentant patriarch lies on his death bed.

Ocean Grove, NJ, United States., December 26, 2013 - (PressReleasePoint) - Author Kharis Macey announced today the release of Upon His Death Bed, published by Outskirts Press.  First novel in The Front House Jumbies serial, this dramatic family saga portrays the collision between two cultures.  Details of this impact –the tension separating the rich and poor –are recalled by John Simpson, dying patriarch of the Simpson clan.

“I have lived the way I was meant to,” voices the wealthiest man in Pastureland Village, while stranded on his death bed.  Even in his final days, he refuses to make amends to God or man for any of his past inequities.  Here, in the master bedroom of The Front House, his beloved son, Payton, waits at his bedside for a confession of truth about his mother Dalia Mendoza, before he, the old man, dies.

Sitting on a hard wooden chair, Payton patiently, though at times angrily, anticipates hearing his father’s revelation as to why he was raised in Manchester, England.  There, in The Great Sycamore, the family’s English mansion, he was brought up as the son of his father’s legal wife, Mary Simpson, and not by his blood mother Dalia.  Due to this inconsistency, Payton was on a lifelong search for his wholeness factor –his connection to humanity, which he could only inherit from his own mother.

In time, the controlling and charismatic patriarch reveals much more of his past sins and joys, in recounting his manipulation of his wife Mary and that of his mistress Dalia.  In recalling his own joys and sins, he slowly reveals the secrets of many family members, as well as his knowledge of the villagers and their customs, as he spoke of “bad-eye” and the “bakoo bottle.”

Upon His Death Bed is rich in individual tales of the happiness and sadness of humankind, as the drama of the Simpson’s complex way of life is provocatively revealed.  In its pages, the readers explore the two most important events occurring in the existence of man –birth and death.  In reading further, they also question the motive of John Simpson’s choice to love the mixed race girl, Dalia, while easily rejecting Black Dora Sago, the woman his son loved.

Upon His Death Bed is available on-line in a paperback edition through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.
