Black & Veatch to participate in expansion of two power plants in Thailand

Award represents second and third large-scale energy project wins inthree years

BANGKOK, THAILAND (26 September 2011) – Marubeni Corporation has selectedBlack & Veatch to support the balance-of-plant design and procurement forthe expansion of two large power generation facilities in Thailand. Combined,the projects represent an investment of approximately US$ 1 billion by theElectricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the owner of bothfacilities.

“Thailand’s economic recovery accelerates the need for additional newgeneration capacity to keep up with demand within the country and region,” saidDr. Hoe Wai Cheong, Managing Director, Asia and Middle East, India, Europe andAfrica (MEIEA), Black & Veatch’s global energy business. “When completed in2014, the combined expansion projects will provide 1,500 megawatts ofadditional capacity – the equivalent to power more than 1.5 million homes.”

The projects involve adding a new power block to the Chana Combined CyclePower Plant (Chana 2) in the Songkhla province, and a fourth combined cyclepower block to the Wang Noi facility (Wang Noi 4) in Ayutthaya province. Chana2 will consist of two, single-shaft combined cycle trains, each approximately390 megawatts. This arrangement, the first of its kind in Thailand, providesmore flexibility for power plant operation and will improve plantefficiency.

Marubeni, in consortium with Siemens AG and Siemens Limited (Thailand), wasawarded a lump sum engineering, procurement and construction contract for bothprojects. Black & Veatch will provide Marubeni with design engineering andprocurement for balance-of-plant equipment and other services includingtechnical field assistance, supply of the heat recovery steam generators andcommissioning of other Black & Veatch furnished plant equipment.

  • Upon completion, the new gas-fired combined cycle power blocks at Chana 2and Wang Noi 4 will produce 782 megawatts and 769 megawatts, respectively
