Black & Veatch technology gaining significant market share in China
Two new liquefied natural gas projects represent fourth andfifth wins in 2011
BEIJING, PR CHINA. (22 June 2011) – Black & Veatch and Chemtex willdesign and build two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in ShaanxiProvince, PR China. The new facilities feature Black & Veatch’s patentedPRICO® process and will be used to provide natural gas for peak shaving andvehicle fuel in the region.
The Black & Veatch-Chemtex team has won five LNG projects in China sincethe beginning of 2011, and 13 since 2006.
“The PRICO process has become very successful in China because of itssimplified operations, lower capital and operating costs and its flexibility infeed gas composition,” said Brian Price, Vice President and LNG TechnologyManager for Black & Veatch’s energy business. “The Black &Veatch-Chemtex team has won more than half of all new LNG projects in Chinasince 2006, all of which use the PRICO process.”
The two facilities, located in Jingbian City and Yulin City, ShaanxiProvince, will be used to liquefy natural gas for vehicle fuel in the region,off-setting the use of diesel and gasoline. The use of LNG for vehicle fuelprovides both environmental and economic benefits. One liter of LNG iscomparable to 0.6 liters of diesel in vehicle fuel use.
“Our sustained growth in China is fueled by the success of earlier projectsthat continue to exceed our client’s expectations,” said Hoe Wai Cheong,Managing Director for Asia and Middle East, India, Europe and Africa regions inBlack & Veatch’s global energy business. “China’s natural gas pipelineinfrastructure is developing, and the country’s size presents challenges insupplying much-needed clean fuel to local residents and businesses. Black &Veatch-Chemtex LNG facilities enable our clients to quickly move LNG tomarket.”

Editor’s Notes:
- Black & Veatch and Chemtex are providing engineering, procurement andconstruction services for the Jingbian Xingyuan LNG Project and the YulinYuanheng LNG Peak Shaving Project.
- The Jingbian Xingyuan LNG Project is located in Jingbian City and owned byShaanxi Jingbian Xingyuan Industry Ltd. When completed, the facility will havea 1.5 million nominal cubic meters per day capacity.
- The Yulin Yuanheng LNG Peak Shaving Project is located in Ma HuangliangIndustrial Park in Yulin City. When completed, the facility will also have a 1million nominal cubic meter per day capacity.
- Black & Veatch is an industry pioneer in LNG, involved in LNGfacilities since the early 1960s. The company has been involved with a numberof LNG facilities worldwide, including 21 operating liquefaction facilities infive different countries with an additional ten projects in development at thistime.
- PRICO is an innovative process developed by Black & Veatch to liquefynatural gas, making it available for transport via truck or ocean tanker. Theprocess uses a Black & Veatch-patented, single-mixed refrigerant loop fornatural gas liquefaction. The process boasts several key advantages ,including:
- The lowest capital costs of all competing technologies.
- A simplified refrigeration system that requires minimal equipment
- Simplified control and maintenance
- The PRICO process is used in LNG production facilities worldwide because ofits flexibility for LNG capacity and in feed gas composition. This flexibilityis invaluable for clients because they receive natural gas from multiplesources with varying composition and conditions.
- Black & Veatch-Chemtex recently completed the Lanzhou LNG facility inLanzhou, China.
- The Lanzhou facility is the 4th LNG plant to be completed in China by theBlack & Veatch – Chemtex team.
- LNG production was achieved just 10 days after initial start up operationsbegan at the Lanzhou facility. Similar plants, using other refrigerationprocesses, can take months – or even up to a year – before full capacityoperations are achieved.
