BUSAN STRAITS (NNS) -- U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and embarked 7th Fleet staff opened the 2014 Combined Federal Campaign Overseas (CFC-O) with a cake-cutting ceremony Aug. 30.

The Combined Federal Campaign was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to promote awareness for various nonprofit organizations and federations and provide federal employees with a simple and efficient method to donate to their favorite organizations.

"In 2009, my father passed away from a heart attack and I was able to attend his funeral with the help of a charitable foundation sponsored by the CFC," said 7th Fleet CFC Coordinator Chief Damage Controlman Andre Sutherland. "I know this program can help change people's lives for the better, and I'm really proud to be a part of it."

More than 2,600 organizations are included in this year's charity listing, including disease research programs and scholarship funds. Prospective donors can pay with cash, checks or online with donations as low as one dollar. For Sailors on Blue Ridge, just giving back is enough.

"I believe helping others is one of the greatest feelings you can have," Assistant CFC Coordinator Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Kevin Linney, attached to 7th Fleet. "I love being part of something bigger than myself, and I hope this year's campaign will inspire others to participate and raise money for these important programs."

The 2014 campaign will officially run Sept. 8th-Nov. 7th. For more information on the Combined Federal Campaign Overseas, visit
