Article focuses on actionable insights to drive business and policy benefits for the health industry

Booz Allen principal Joachim Roski and vice president Tim Andrews have co-authored “Creating Value In Health Care Through Big Data: Opportunities And Policy Implications,” an article that appears in the July issue of Health Affairs, the leading peer-reviewed journal of health policy thought and research. George W. Bo-Linn, a senior advisor at Alvarez & Marsal's Improvement Division also contributed to the piece.

Booz Allen’s collective expertise and experience leveraging big data and advanced analytics to support public and private sector clients serves as a strong foundation for the Health Affairs piece.  The article defines big data and its industry impact, lays out critical opportunities and challenges, and outlines policy changes that would allow organizations to harvest the full value of big data for health care.

“It can be argued that the field of healthcare has been slower to adopt large-scale data integration, but there are also massive amounts of untapped, emerging health-related data that are ripe for analysis,” said Joachim Roski, principal at Booz Allen.  “With noted hurdles still to cross – i.e. ensuring the right IT infrastructure is in place and undertaking an examination of critical data sharing and privacy policy changes -- we wanted to provide a clear path forward for the industry, with the ultimate goal to improve quality of care and deliver better outcomes at lower costs.”

To further extend the conversation around the importance of big data and health care, several expert contributors to the July Health Affairs issue will also participate in Using Big Data to Transform Care, a National Press Club event on Wednesday, July 9th at 9:00am (ET).  Booz Allen’s Joachim Roski will have the honor of delivering the event overview.   Speakers from prominent organizations such as; Yale School of Medicine, Harvard Law School and CMS will lead deeper discussions on session topics including; Using Big Data at the Point of Care, Research Issues, the Role of the Federal Government and Obstacles/Challenges of Using Big Data.

More on the event is here: http://bit.ly/1m9KAoC. Health Affairs will provide live tweets from the briefing on Twitter via @HA_Events. To join the conversation, use the hashtag, #HA_BigData.
