Boston Symphony Orchestra To Hold Food Drive To Benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank, April 1, 2, And 3 AT Symphony Hall

The Boston Symphony Orchestra will hold a food drive at Symphony Hall in conjunction with Boston Symphony Orchestra performances of Mendelssohn’s stirring dramatic oratorioElijahon Thursday, April 1, Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3, to benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank. The BSO’s food drive is taking place in connection with “Orchestras Feeding America,” a nationwide project of the League of American Orchestras, which represents the nation’s professional, volunteer, and youth orchestras.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra is also teaming up with The Greater Boston Food Bank to offer a Virtual Aid Food Drive to complement the one that is taking place in Symphony Hall on April 1, 2, and 3. To make a cash donation to The Greater Boston Food Bank, visit www.bso.org/fooddrive.
Receptacles for the BSO’s food drive at Symphony Hall will be available at both the Massachusetts Avenue and Cohen Wing entrances, before concerts and during concert intermissions on April 1, 2, and 3 (concerts begin at 8 p.m.). Though patrons with tickets to these concerts are especially encouraged to support the food drive, members of the community are also invited to participate in the food drive by dropping food items off between 7 and 8 p.m. each night. The BSO food drive can only accept canned food items, including canned tuna, chicken, or other meats, canned vegetables and fruit, and canned juices, soups, and pasta. For safety reasons, the Greater Boston Food Bank does not accept baby food, baby formula, and glass containers.
The “Orchestras Feeding America” program was launched in 2009 with 250 orchestras participating nationwide to collect over 200,000 pounds of food.
The April 1, 2, and 3 performances of Mendelssohn’sElijahfeature the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Levine and joined by soprano Christine Brewer, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, tenor Aleksandrs Antoneko, and bass-baritone Shenyang. The concert marks the kick-off to the 40th anniversary celebration of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, conducted by John Oliver. The BSO’s 2009-10 season continues through May 1. The Greater Boston Food Bank
The Greater Boston Food Bank distributes approximately 30 million pounds of food and grocery products annually to more than 600 hunger-relief agencies in a dedicated partnership to end hunger in eastern Massachusetts.
