Maidstone, Kent, January 24, 2011 (PressReleasePoint) -- Breast enlargement has always been popular amongst women. You will regularly see and hear of celebrities and public figures who have had breast enlargement and many surveys carried out show that a bulk of women would consider having it done themselves.

These days, women have breast enlargements for a range of reasons, but the most common reasons usually given are to gain a more appealing appearance and raise self confidence.

In the past, some have blamed for the growing trend for breast enlargement on the media. It has also been suggested that the portrayal of idolized characters and unrealistic body types shown throughout television, magazines and other media outlets, has caused women to try to imitate these bodies.

However, even before the days of media and cosmetic surgery, women would dress and style themselves in a way that would emphasize the bust, amongst other body parts. Corsets and bustiers are a perfect example of this, in that they would push up the bust and pull in the waist, creating the illusion of breast enlargement.

Also, like nowadays, breast implants are not the only form of body alteration that occurs. Body alteration has been known to occur as far back as 8700BC, when tribes around the world would wear lip plates and also Giraffe women who would wear metal coils around there necks to give the appearance of an elongated neck. And even the wide spread and commonly known practice of Chinese Foot Binding. The reasoning behind these types of body alteration tend to be to symbolize certain aspects such as a young girls maturity, show a women's eligibility for marriage, and other times, simply to have the idolized appearance.

Most of these kinds of practices have now been dropped after a raise in awareness and strong concern of the bad affects these pressures were putting on the female body and still today, breast enlargement, like other forms of cosmetic surgery has risks. Despite this, it has not affected its popularity as breast enlargements surgery has seen the biggest growth of all cosmetic surgeries performed in the UK in 2010.
