BSAS members interested in helping to maintain the UK’s world-class research standards are being asked to join a national panel to help assess the quality of research in higher education institutions.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF), the UK’s system responsible for assessing and ranking academics and university departments, is due to publish its next assessment in 2021.

Made up of UK higher education funding bodies including the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Scottish Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland, REF is currently recruiting a panel of animal science experts.

As part of a panel, which will be made up of senior academics, international members and research users, members will assess the quality of an institution’s outputs, including publications, and their impact beyond academia.

They will also assess the environment of the institution that supports research.

By carrying out the assessments, REF 2021 aims to provide accountability for public investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits of this investment, provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks, and inform the selective allocation of funding for research.

Any member of BSAS interested in joining the REF 2021 panel must be nominated by the society to be considered.

To be nominated please send an emailing expressing interest to BSAS by 5pm on Tuesday 5 November.
