NEW CLASSICAL COMPANION IS LAUNCHED IN CONJUNCTION WITH

BSO PROGRAMS FEATURING MUSIC INSPIRED BY SHAKESPEARE’S

THE TEMPEST,

BSO.org launches the final installment in its 2010-11 online Classical Companion series this week with an edition focusing on music influenced by the writings of William Shakespeare, available at www.bso.org/classicalcompanion. The William Shakespeare Classical Companion is presented in conjunction with BSO programs inspired by Shakespeare’sThe Tempest, including works by Sibelius, Thomas Adès, and Tchaikovsky, under the direction of Mr. Adès, March 25 and 26, andRomeo and Juliet, with Charles Dutoit leading Berlioz’s extraordinary interpretation of that drama, May 5, 6, and 7.

The new William Shakespeare Classical Companion features a special video collaboration featuring Lenox, MA’s acclaimed Shakespeare & Company in scenes fromThe Tempest, available now a twww.bso.org/classicalcompanion, andRomeo and Juliet, available starting Thursday, March 24.

The William Shakespeare Classical Companion will also include an introductory segment entitled “Shakespeare and Music” by BSO Assistant Director of Program Publications Robert Kirzinger; a video commentary entitled “Music in Shakespeare” by Shakespeare and Company actors and staff about the collaboration with the BSO; and audio analysis of each composer’s interpretation of the Shakespeare plays, narrated by BSO Assistant Director of Program Publications Eleanor McGourty. DETAILS ON THE BSO’S NEW SHAKESPEARE-INSPIRED CLASSICAL COMPANION

Featuring Shakespeare and Company actors in excerpts fromThe TempestandRomeo and Juliet, the BSO’s new Classical Companion will offer viewers two options for viewing these scenes—first, as straight dramas with no music accompaniment, and second, with music accompaniment, illustrating how each composer interpreted the scenes and depicted the action through his music. Scenes fromRomeo and Julietto be featured include the Balcony Scene (Act 2, Scene 2), with music by Tchaikovsky, and the Fight Scene between Romeo and Tybalt (Act 3, Scene 1), with music by Prokofiev. Scenes fromThe Tempestto be featured include the scene in which Miranda and Ferdinand meet (Act 1, Scene 2), with music by Sibelius, and the Log Scene (Act 3, Scene 1), in which Ferdinand and Miranda agree to marry, with music by Tchaikovsky.

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets for the regular-season Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts range in price from $29 to $118: Tuesday and Thursday evenings are priced from $29 to $108, Friday afternoons are priced from $29 to $103, and Friday and Saturday evenings are priced from $31 to $118.
