will be featured speakers during the Council on Legal Education Opportunity Thurgood Marshall Legal Education Opportunity Program (CLEO) Professional Development Seminar & Career Fair on June 12-15, 2009 at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center Hotel in Detroit. 



Mr. Mathis will be featured during a panel presentation entitled: "Establishing Your Ground in the Legal Profession." Mr. Steffans will co-present a program on successful cover letter writing.  



Eric M. Mathis 



Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, Mr. Mathis practices primarily in the area of commercial litigation. He concentrates his practice in litigation matters, in both state and federal courts. His experience includes quiet title actions, nuisance and trespass cases, landlord/tenant cases and other real estate litigation matters. He represents Tier 1 automotive suppliers, and has been successful in receiving temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions. He defends product liability cases, with extensive experience defending asbestos claims on a state and nationwide basis.  



Mr. Mathis serves on the Board of Directors of the Wolverine Bar Association and on the Barristers Board of Directors for the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, where he was named 2007 Barrister of the Year. He is Chair of the Young Lawyers Division of the National Bar Association. He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Litigation, is a Committee Vice-Chair of the Real Property Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law and a member of the Diversity Committee of the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law. He also is a member of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. In addition, Mr. Mathis frequently presents at conferences. 



Mr. Mathis graduated from the University of Michigan (B.A., 1996) and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (J.D., 2002), where he wrote for

The Pittsburgh Journal of Technology Law and Policy

and served as Vice-President of the Black Law Students Association, coordinating the High School Moot Court Competition and the Street Law Clinic.  



Benjamin K. Steffans 



Based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, Mr. Steffans concentrates his practice in the areas of labor and employment law and franchise law. He also has experience handling issues regarding information privacy and breaches of sensitive information.  



The Michigan Broadcaster

recently published Mr. Steffans's article "The Changing Labor Law Landscape: A discussion of the Pending Federal Card-Check Legislation." 



Mr. Steffans is a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. 



Mr. Steffans is a graduate of Boston College Law School (J.D., 2006) where he was a member of the American Constitution Society and the Federalist Society. He was a participant in the Boston College Law School Negotiation Competition and the Wendell F. Grimes Moot Court. He also is a graduate of Michigan State University (B.A.,
