When those outdoor projects involve digging, Entergy New Orleans, Inc., Entergy Louisiana, LLC and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C. remind you to grab your phone first and call 811. Since April is National Safe Digging Month, customers are reminded now and throughout the year to focus on preventing serious consequences that could occur from digging without knowing what’s beneath the surface – whether planting a shrub or installing a swimming pool. Consequences can range from utility outages to injuries and even fatalities. When customers call the free 811 hotline,” said Dennis Dawsey, vice president of customer service for Entergy's Louisiana companies, “they learn what structures may be buried beneath the ground, including natural gas pipelines, electric power lines and other services.” In addition to injuries, unsafe digging can cause property damage and service interruptions. Those who accidentally disrupt utility services to neighborhoods by damaging or severing underground lines can be responsible for expensive repairs and fines. Utilities must respond within 48 hours to requests made through calling 811. Safety is always our top priority,” said Dawsey, “and we urge you to be as vigilant about avoiding underground utilities as you are in avoiding overhead lines. If you suspect utility damage of any kind, leave the area immediately and call 1-800-ENTERGY (800-368-3749) or 911. A gas leak could be occurring if you smell the distinctive natural gas odor, hear a hissing or whistling sound near a gas appliance or see dead vegetation or bubbles near a gas line.
