For the second year in succession, rental car shortages in the Costa Blanca region of Spain are leaving many frustrated holiday visitors seeking alternative modes of transport for their summer holidays.

Poole, England 13-08-2010

Holiday visitors to the Costa Blanca region of Spain are being advised that due to rental car shortages at both Alicante and Murcia airports, alternative means of transportation should be considered. For the second year in succession, there is a widespread shortage caused primarily by unfavourable economic conditions in Spain.

In Spain, many of the rental car companies hire extra cars during the busy summer months to boost the size of their rental car fleets. The credit crunch in Spain has made it much more difficult for these companies to operate with larger fleets, which has lead to the shortages and inflated rental prices. Tourists arriving at the 2 main Costa Blanca airports without a pre-booked rental car last summer discovered that there were no rental cars available, and had to seek alternative means of transportation.

The 2010 situation is that vehicle availability for July and August at both Alicante and Murcia is very limited. Larger vehicles are virtually impossible to find for many dates.

The shortages are at least good news for the local Spanish taxi and transfer companies who last year saw a big increase in business as they ferried holidaymakers to their resorts. The general advice to travellers to the Costa Blanca is to reserve a holiday rental vehicle at the earliest possible date.
