CARFAX® Selects MongoDB to Power 11 Billion Record Database
New York—March 5, 2013— 10gen, the MongoDB company, today announced that CARFAX®, the trusted provider of vehicle history information, has selected MongoDB to power its vehicle history database. With more than 11 billion records to date, the database generates CARFAX Vehicle History Reports™ (VHR) and other products that help millions of people buy and sell used cars with more confidence.
The environment being replaced by MongoDB is a legacy VMS-based platform system that became cumbersome and too expensive to operate and maintain. MongoDB provides a dramatic improvement in performance, both in batch and transactional data delivery. This increase in performance will result in many years of growth at a fraction of the footprint that the legacy platform required.
“Replacing our legacy database with MongoDB helps position us for future growth,” said Joedy Lenz, CTO at CARFAX. “MongoDB improves our ability to support continued customer demand and the growth of our vehicle history database.”
“CARFAX, like many companies, outgrew the capabilities of a 30-year-old relational database technology,” said Max Schireson, CEO at 10gen. “We’re pleased that MongoDB provides the scalability and flexibility that can help CARFAX continue to efficiently analyze their data and deliver quick reporting to their customers.”
CARFAX’s initial MongoDB deployment involves 50 servers. MongoDB will be the primary data store for the company’s products.
As one of the most popular new technologies, MongoDB has more than 3.8 million downloads, 50,000 Online Education registrations, 15,000 MongoDB User Group (MUG) members, 14,000 MongoDB Monitoring Service users and 10,000 attendees at MongoDB global events in 2012.
MongoDB is the open-source, document database popular among developers and IT professionals due to its agile and scalable approach. MongoDB provides a JSON data model with dynamic schemas, extensive driver support, auto-sharding, built-in replication and high availability, full and flexible index support, rich queries, aggregation, in-place updates and GridFS for large file storage.
