September 14, 2009 (TOKYO) -- Adrian Raeside -- longtime editorial cartoonist, creator of the daily strip "The Other Coast", animator, author -- appears for a lively hour-long interview on the latest episode of Deconstructing Comics Podcast, published today.

Among he topics covered in the interview: how he got his start in comics, his children's book series "Dennis the Dragon," his work on animation (his own cartoons, as well as writing for such series as "Atomic Betty"), his devotion to environmental causes, and the future of newspaper comics.

A frequent theme of "The Other Coast" is that changed behavior to prevent one kind of environmental catastrophe often contributes instead to a different one. In the interview, he points to the example of buying organic produce, raised without chemicals, but shipped from abroad, requiring more fossil fuels to be burned. "There is a strange hypocrisy that we all have. We do things that make us feel good but aren't necessarily the solution to the problem," Raeside says in the interview.

"Raeside was a blast to talk to," said Deconstructing Comics host Tim Young. "He had a lot of interesting things to say, and a lot of funny asides."

Raeside also discusses his latest book, "Return to Antarctica," about his grandfather who went on the 1910 Scott expedition to the South Pole.
