Cedar Rapids Hy-Vee Employee Earns Company's Highest Honor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Aug. 23, 2018) — Many companies will say their employees are passionate about people. But when it comes to Roxann Martinek, HR manager at the Edgewood Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids, you see her passion for her people every time one of her colleagues celebrates a birthday. Each and every employee gets a handmade card from Martinek.

“She sends handmade, personalized birthday cards to employees and customers – she makes every card,” Jamie Franck, regional vice president for Hy-Vee’s eastern region, said. “In my years as Roxann’s store director, she delivered above and beyond in every way imaginable and she continues to do so today.”

That commitment to people is just one of the reasons why today fellow employees, family members, customers and Hy-Vee executives gathered at the Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids to surprise Martinek with the Legendary Customer Service Award. The award recognizes exemplary achievement in providing service that exceeds customers’ expectations. Only nine winners are selected each year from among more than 80,000 Hy-Vee employees across eight states.

“Roxann exemplifies the Hy-Vee fundamentals of caring and dedication,” Tiffany Chamberlain, pharmacist at the Edgewood Hy-Vee, said. “When my son had to go to the hospital several years ago for an anaphylactic reaction, Roxann refused to let me drive myself. She quickly packed up her office and drove me to the hospital. She stayed with me the entire time. We were so touched at how she went the extra mile for us without hesitation – especially at such a critical time.”

Roxann’s commitment to serving others extends far beyond the aisles of her Hy-Vee store, and most recently was demonstrated through her commitment to the volunteers and partners of JDRF Iowa. “Roxann has volunteered for JDRF for more than 20 years,” AnnElise Walsh, executive director of JDRF Iowa, said. “Through all of these years, she has shown us the true meaning of customer service. Most recently, we asked her to take on the task of making all our corporate supporters and donors feel appreciated at our JDRF One Walk. She is able to make every volunteer, every walker, every corporate partner feel like we cannot find a cure without them – and we can’t. It is a pleasure to have her as part of our team.”

Hy-Vee’s Chairman, CEO and President Randy Edeker said Martinek demonstrates exactly the type of commitment to customers that Hy-Vee leaders had in mind when the Legendary Customer Service Award was established in 2006.

“Roxann lives out the things Hy-Vee stands for in everything she does — helpful, honest and respectful service to our customers. Over and over, nominators called out her dedication to the community and the people who live in it and how it shows in her hard work,” Edeker said. “This award honors the best of the best from among our Hy-Vee family, and Roxann is most deserving of this recognition.

Candidates are nominated for the Legendary Customer Service Award by their co-workers, and winners are selected by a panel of Hy-Vee’s top officers. Nominations are evaluated on the employee’s overall contributions to the company in nine areas: passion for customer service, attitude, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving skills, dedication to Hy-Vee fundamentals, communication skills, professional image and self-confidence.

Martinek and the other 2018 recipients of the Legendary Customer Service Award will be inducted into
Hy-Vee’s Customer Service Hall of Fame and receive a coveted Legendary Customer Service name badge and a custom-designed ring to commemorate the honor. They will be guests of honor at the Hy-Vee service award dinner in October, which honors employees for longevity of service. They will also be recognized at Hy-Vee’s annual stockholders’ meeting in December. And finally, their photos will be prominently featured on the side of Hy-Vee trucks, showcasing their helpful smiles to millions of travelers across the Midwest.
