Equal Justice Initiative to Honor Squire Sanders Trial Lawyer George H. Kendall for Legal Advocacy and Leadership of Firm’s Innovative Public Service Initiative

16 March 2010 - George H. Kendall, director of the Public Service Initiative at global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P and of counsel in its New York office, will be honored March 23 by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), which has selected Kendall to receive the Equal Justice Champion Award. EJI is a private nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to indigent defendants and prisoners.

The award is given in recognition of Kendall’s 30 years of extraordinary legal assistance to condemned and incarcerated persons in the United States. Throughout his career he has created opportunities for hundreds of private lawyers to provide pro bono assistance to some of the most desperately needy people in the country.

“During these challenging economic times, law firms have a duty to redouble their commitments to providing pro bono representation to those in greatest need. George Kendall and his team have taken on the most demanding cases involving major constitutional issues,” said Squire Sanders Chair James J. Maiwurm. “He has built strong relationships with other major law firms, prominent public interest lawyers, law school faculty, and members of the judicial, legislative and executive branches that also benefit the firm’s clients.”

Howard J. C. Nicols, who oversees the firm’s advocacy practices, said Kendall’s vision and expertise benefit the firm in several ways: “Squire Sanders is fortunate to have George Kendall at the helm of our initiative, as his leadership has helped expand the firm’s pro bono activities, brought exceptional talent to our federal and appellate practices, and provided unparalleled opportunities for our associates to develop their abilities.”

“Squire Sanders deserves great credit for its commitment to pro bono work, and the firm’s support and work by its talented lawyers have helped ensure exceptional pro bono representation in key cases involving significant issues at the state and federal levels,” Kendall said.

EJI will also honor the legal department at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company and DuPont general counsel Thomas L. Sager.
