Expansion and enhancement of 3PLs’ distribution network
According to press reports, Clayco has won a design/build contract from Caterpillar Logistics for a US$65.0 million, 92,900 m2 distribution centre in Clayton. The project is part of a multi-year expansion and enhancement of the logistics providers’ distribution network. The selection of Clayton as the location for the logistics centre was reported in December 2009 when the state of Ohio announced it was awarding US$1.8 million in tax incentives to Caterpillar for the project. When fully resourced, the facility will employ between 500 and 600 people.
Once fully operational in 2011, it is intended that the Clayton facility will replace Caterpillar’s regional distribution site in Indianapolis and perform some of the work being done at a parts distribution centre in Morton, Ill.
Clayton City Council sold 163 acres to Caterpillar Logistics for just under US$2.1 million. The deal includes all 143 acres of the city’s Commerce Park on Hoke Road, plus 20 acres the city bought from Miami Valley Career Technology Center.
Under the terms of the deal, the City will donate land to Caterpillar Logistics if the Company remains at the site for more than 11 years. If it pulls out in less than seven years, Caterpillar will have to repay the full purchase price. That figure is reduced 25.0% per year starting after the seven-year mark.
